![]() To look at the calendars is to witness not only the obvious and the alluded-to, but also a fascinating view of the swiftly changing, wildly imagined landscape of fashion photography, and fashion itself (and yes, there are clothes-just not, you know, lots of them). Now, at last, you too can own a Pirelli calendar, or at least a lavish, weighty collection of all of them- Pirelli: The Calendar 50 Years and More, will be out from Taschen on August 10 (mark your own calendar meanwhile and feast your eyes here). After all, the actual calendar was only ever available on an ultra-exclusive basis to a select few clientele and VIPs: The rest of the world ogled from afar at the images dreamed up by the Pirelli art directors and its elite photographers, each given carte blanche: Avedon, Leibovitz, Newton, Mert and Marcus, Inez and Vinoodh, among them. Brazen, artful, naughty, titillating relentlessly avant-garde shamelessly provocative mildly subliminal-and, well, a total tease. Since 1964, when the Italian tire company’s execs latched on to the inherent marketing possibilities of that timeworn pairing-girls and cars! Whoever would have thought?-its annual arrival has occasioned an event rivaled only, perhaps, by the slap of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue striking the newsstand, or, these days, the tap of a kitten heel on the Victoria’s Secret runway. ![]() Oh, the Pirelli Calendar, that splashily tantalizing arbiter of our times. ![]()
